Help Cant Copy MP3s from My SD Card to My Computer

I may be losing my technical know-how so, sorry for the ignorance in this question. I want to copy mp3s stored on my Galaxy Note 4 sd drive to my home computer.

When i connect the device by usb cable, to the computer (Windows 8.1) , i can see my phone internal and external folders. When I navigate to the phone's external storage folder , then drag or copy an mp3 to paste in a folder on my computer , it fails and wont begin copying. I used to do this many times with no problem. Ive been seriously ill over the yrs and i know i didnt forget how to do this but maybe i have...

If your PC has a card reader slot you could try powering down your phone, removing the card and try reading the card through the reader.

One thing I just thought of. Is your phone unlocked when you are trying to copy the files?

Unfortunately it doesnt have a card reader slot. My device is unlocked , i respond "allow" when the pop up message on the phone prompts. The folders show up on my computer screen when i navigate thru them but i cant move a single file from the phone to the computer.

You should also turn off the preview pane on your windows explorer window.

I had problems with transferring different files (videos, pics and mp3s) from my SD card to my computer a while back and that solved my problem.

Did Windows File Explorer or whatever they call it on Macs not work?

Always worked for me except I don't use Macs.
Mine is a HP Microsoft 8.1. I am thinking it is my Note 4 thats the issue. i can see the files on the computer explorer window when i link the device to the computer but the device "disconnects" (or acts like it did) when i copy from the device/ sdcard folder to a location on the desktop.

Are you perhaps using a USB hub? It may be a problem with that. Also try changing the USB port you plug your device into and cable.
You should also check that drivers are properly installed on your laptop.

I did plug into a different usb port , same results. connecting direct from fhe device to the computer. I hadnt thought of checking the drivers - good point . I will do a full check up next and see.

The resolution was definitely the sd/usb plugin ! i put the sd card into the usb stick drive slot and plugged it into the usb port! I am back in business! i will still lsook for any driver updates to be added to the computer so all ! need is to plug the usb cable
