Root Cant even install xRecovery

ive beeen relentlessly trying to install xrecoovery on my x10a . wont install i badly want to put CM GB os on this phone. i hate froyo thats on it! ive tried to debrand my phone in hopes of sony pc companion would upgrade to gb for me. All links i find for debranding are blocked by fcc or something. Any one have any working links for debranding or tutorial for xrecovery that will work?
firmware version is 2.1-update1
baseband 2.1.65
kernel 2.6.29
build 2.1.A.O.492
This is an ATT phone that i have unlocked ( code provided by ATT ) running on T-Mobile if that matters

wrote this first...this included the abridged version of the rooting, and instructions to install xRecovery

You basically have to back everything you want first (contacts and pics and stuff) because you are going to wipe the phone clean.

You will install a generic copy of 2.3. Then you need to root the phone by installing a portion of 2.1 kernel, rooting, then reinstalling a portion of 2.3. Then you can push xRecovery and copy of the ROM you want to use, then reboot into xRecovery and wipe things clean, and install any 2.3 ROM you want.
