Have you tried a different USB cord? Do you have another computer you could try connecting to?

Also make sure you have the drivers for your phone installed

Depending on your intentions, the connection may require different things. If u are just connecting it to push/pull files, the experience should be straightfprward. On the other hand, if u are connecting for anything else (i.e. Tethering, etc...) You may need to enable development mode in settings - applications - development (tick all boxes on).
