Can't get my S5830i to vibrate when I get a text.

Whatever am I doing wrong?

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy GT-S5830i running a stock rom, Android version 2.3.6.

Home screen->Settings->Sound->Vibrate is set to "Only when not in silent mode."

The phone is not in silent mode.

Within the stock messaging app, Settings->Select Ringtone is set to some silly mp3 file I found on the internet.

I can't find any mention of vibration alerts within the app options.

When I get a text, I hear the silly noise, but the phone never vibrates. I've tried setting Vibrate to "always" and this doesn't fix the problem.

Have you tried it with one of the stock message alerts to see if it vibrates? It could be the the mp3 you have selected.

I don't know what it was (changing mp3's didn't fix it), but I know that doing a factory reset fixed it(!) This is sort-of obvious in the sense that if a factory reset hadn't fixed it then the phone would probably have been actually broken.

For what it's worth, I wrote down pretty much exactly what I did

there [back up everythingl, factory reset, restore everything]

Goodness knows what was wrong.
