Can't get past security number

So I'm trying to set this phone to use only the fingerprint to let me in. I set up some secondary PIN number, which I know and use. But the phone won't let me in.

What do I do after I enter the PIN number. Pressing the fingerprint sensor doesn't do anything. Even though I had that set up, it's never let me get to the screen. After I swipe up, the phone gives me the digits and 'emergency' and a check mark, then the back arrow at bottom left.

Any help for getting back into my phone would be appreciated.

I've rebooted. AFAIK can't remove anything if I can't access settings, unless there's a secret way.

My question is more about how to enter a known PIN number in Android 7.1.1. So far everything I find is about bypassing forgotten passwords, PIN, etc.

Do I press the fingerprint sensor after I enter the PIN number using the number keys?
