can't get to keyboard to make corrections when composing voice text

Galaxy S5, Verizon, version 4.4. When composing text messages, I am using the stock software which came with the phone. When composing a text by voice, I can't get back to the keyboard to make corrections by tapping the text. This is a new development. I have to get out of messaging, reopen it, go to the draft of the message, and when I tap on it I can get to the keyboard to make the corrections. This is getting to be a real pain.
