can't hear caller on galaxy s 3

My samsung galaxy s3 has this problem with calls. I can't hear someone talking to me unless i have earbuds in or i have the caller on speaker. I dont understand why it won't work normally? is it supposed to be like that or is there a way to fix it or what?
