Can't log in to Google

I've just recieved my first Android (and first smartphone) today, it's a Galaxy S. I understand Android is Google's baby, so it seems to be pretty heavily integrated into Google.

However it won't let me sign in to my Google Account. I've signed in successfully using the browser on the phone, I've checked the password and it is correct, but for some reason it keeps saying my username and password don't match. I could not be more certain that they do. I've now tried it 6 times, and each time it's the same answer.

Am I missing something?

Edit : If more information may help... I have a very simple Google account as the only Google thing I use is checkout, my username is just my non-Google email address. My password does contain punctuation, but I don't expect that the punctuation would work in the browser but not for the login. The only thing I can think of is that I need a different type, or specifically a google mail account.

It sounds like you don't actually have a Google account; you simply use a Google service which allows you to use your non-Google email address for authentication. Create yourself a gmail account which can be used on all Google services and you'll be good to go.

Well, it does work now. I did indeed have a Google acount, but I did not have a gmail account - which I most certainly did not and do not want.

However Google have now forced me to have it in order to use the phone. It's pushed my real email account aside on my Google Account, and it's not possible to set it as anything but a backup now. Microsoft got shafted for forcing Internet Explorer on their Windows customers, hopefully Google will get the same for forcing Gmail on their Android customers.

Aside from that it's all working, with the exception of buying apps, which I haven't yet tried, no doubt Google will communicate only through my gmail account.
