Android Question

I have had a problem multiple times on my Android phone that after coming back from a trip abroad, it appears the phone can't access the network. When I switch on the phone after landing the name of my operator is not listed in my status bar. Instead I see "Emergency calls only" and get a "Restricted Access Changed" error message.
I can't make or take calls, can't send text messages, but WIFI still works. Sometimes it can take over 24 hours before I get the service back. This is really irritating. Another strange observation is that this only happens after the return trip to my country. Not after the outward trip.
I usually try things like restarting the phone, opening it up to eject and insert the SIM card and so on, but that never works. After a random amount of time the phone just starts working normally again and I will not have any issues until my next trip abroad.
I have searched the net and not found anyone else with a similar problem. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
