If I can't open the photo gallery because the memory is full, how do I delete the photos in order to clear the memory? Android galaxy note.

If you can't open the gallery at all, that doesn't sound like user memory. It sounds more like SYSTEM memory is full, and they are two different things. Try clearing cache on your apps, deleting your call log (especially if it's long), and deleting old SMS/MMS messages. SMS Cleaner is free in Play and you can choose which messages to delete: I regularly delete anything over two weeks old.
Try that and see if it frees up some system memory. More USER memory is as easy as using a larger microSD card (which are pretty cheap these days). Hope this helps.
