Help Can't protect or hide content without using an app?

Lurker
I have an LG K30. I would like to hide or lock some images on my phone.

Everywhere online including the LG website says I should enable the Content Lock feature in settings or hide folder using a dot (.) in front of the name, however NEITHER of these options work!

The Content Lock feature only works on the QuickMemos+ app. The "Lock" option never shows up as an option for any of my images, only for QuickMemos memos, which I don't even use!

When I try to create a folder with a dot, there is a message that either says "invalid name" or "All invalid characters have been removed" (and it automatically removes the dot).

It's like LG doesn't want me to protect my content or have privacy (which during this process I found out my phone was automatically syncing/backing up all my photos to Google Photos cloud without my permission, anyway. So I have to figure out a way to delete all of those, too).

The question is what app do you want to hide the images from? Media viewers like the gallery app should ignore folders which contain a file called .nomedia (it doesn't matter what, if anything, the file contains), but a file browser will still see them. And if you tell a file browser in its settings to "show hidden files" it will show you all files and folders starting with a "." anyway.

I assume that your problem with creating a folder starting with a "." is related to the app you are using to create it, but since we don't know what app that is I can't say any more. Perhaps the app you are using can't create such folders unless it is set to be able to view them?

Anyway, the bottom line is that tricks like this are not foolproof: there are ways round them for anyone with a basic understanding of the system. So if you just don't want things to show in the gallery app a .nomedia file will suffice, but if you want to block them from someone who has unsupervised access to the phone and is poking around then some sort of file locking app will be needed. Of course in that case the fact that you have locked the files might itself raise questions.

I am using the "File Manager" default file manager app in LG k30 and it will NOT allow me to create a ".nomedia" folder or any folder that starts with a period. I've tried to create it in the main directory and subdirectories like "camera" and "pictures." Nothing works.

The images are displayed in the default app "Gallery" and are found in a "Camera" folder in the directory

The LG K30 is SUPPOSED to have a feature called "Content Lock" that allows you to lock content in QuickMemo + and Gallery, but it's only letting me lock QuickMemo+

I'm trying to hide the file without having to download a third party app. I don't see why that is not possible. No one else seems to have this problem with other LG phones and this is one of the latest models.

Try another file manager. I just created a .nomedia file on my phone using Solid Explorer, no problem.

I've never owned an LG so can't comment on any quirks in their software.
