Can't read SD card with PC

for some reason when I try to access the micro SD card using my PC via USB card reader it freezes the explorer window, inserting a SD card from my GPS works fine???

it’s a Sandisk 4GB micro with an SD adaptor (holder) that has a lock switch and it is set to unlock.

It doesn't freeze my PC just the explorer window when I select the drive. If I pull the SD card out and replace it with one for my GPS it works fine?

What is the best way to access the data on my phones SD card..?

Just had a thought, the reader I have is like 12 years old maybe it can't read a 4GB SD card?

I have issues with accessing the memory card directly on my XP laptop using a card reader, but when mounted as a drive via the phone it works fine. Certain files throw up error messages if I try to copy them via the card reader, but none at all via the phone. Makes no sense to me.

You need to make sure the card reader supports sdhc, any card 4gb and above will be sdhc and the only way to read it will be to use a compatable device or card reader.

Standard sd card readers, like ones built into cheap laptops will only read sd cards (upto 2gb)

If you have a digital camera that supports sdhc then you can use a usb cable to connect it to your pc, with the camera on, you will be able to access the sdhc as you would any other pen drive through 'computer'

Other devices will also work as long as they support sdhc ie smartphones. Just connect with a cable.

Drum roll please….
After freeing the PCB from the enclosure, The silkscreen on the PCB has a date of 2003/7/15. I googled the controller chip GL816 and here is a "snip it"
(The first SDHC compatible card reader controllers are from January 2006, so SDHC support is still far, far away for a card reader from the year 2003. The SD standard required special handling for cards of more than 1GB, and some controllers still did not support more than 1GB SD in the year 2006!)
