If you can remove battery,Start there and also do check for updates,like prl,profile,firmware....
My wifes was doing same thing on boost mobile.this fixed it.
I would send a text from another provider. If you have google voice, text from there to you and your wife's phone. This ensures the problems is on the receiving end and not the sender's end. Once you narrow down to the sender/receiver end, call the prospective provider.
