Can't remove custom

Someone got a hold of my phone at work and now my phone is acting crazy. Battery was draining fast, pics lost, msgs lost, contacts changed, and now my phone boots up and has custom and an unlock icon on screen.
I cannot remove it. Factory reset only helped the rest of the problems - not the custom and unlock icon. I looked it up, it said it could be someone rooted it. I have no clue what that is and why it would be done. It says the phone is not rooted when I followed the steps to use a root checker. Please help.

The unlock icon and custom usually means the stock firmware has been modified. To make that go away, you need to reflash the phone with the stock firmware. What is your complete model number, country and carrier?
