I got a G1 phone last week, and I'm dying to get to work developing some apps. I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 600m with a 1.6GHz Pentium and 512 MB of RAM (yeah, I know; it's old).
I have installed Eclipse 3.4, the 1.5 SDK and the ADT plugin. No problems with any of that. I can start a new Android project, or open an existing one. I have been looking at the sample apps and going through the tutorials, but I've hit a brick wall with the Emulator.
It just won't boot. It doesn't give me any error messages, but it never gets past the animated boot logo. I'll leave it running for 20 or 30 minutes, and still get nothing but the animated "ANDROID" logo. In fact, at one point I decided to just leave it running and forget about it. When I came back to my computer a while later, it had shut itself down -- I assume because the CPU was overheating. I can prevent this by running at nice +1, but of course that's even slower.
I now my system is hardly a hot rod, so I was expecting things to be slow. But it just won't work at all. I am hoping to be able to get something newer in a few months, but I don't want to wait that long to get started.
Has anyone been able to get the emulator to run on an older system? Any suggestions? Is there a way I can at least look at the running processes and system logs in the VM while it's booting, so I can get an idea of where it is in the boot process?
I would appreciate any help you can offer. I have a serious itch to write some apps, but this problem is completely holding me back.
