Can't save file shortcuts to Huawei Mate 8 home screen

I'm not able to save file shortcuts to my home screen using both Huawei launcher and Nova launcher (pro version).

I have tried using various file managers - ES File Manager, Discoverer (Linda File Manager), Solid Explorer - in all cases when I select various downloaded PDF files then click the three vertical dots then click Create Shortcut or Install Shortcut, a message pops up to say "Shortcut installed on home screen" but when I search on the home screens (with empty spaces) no shortcut has been installed there.

Can anyone offer advice?

OK, I worked out a couple of methods that work.

When in the default Huawei launcher, download File Shortcut from Google Play Store, then go to Widgets list and click on (no need to drag and drop) the newly installed File Shortcut widget. Click on Gallery, then select a PDF, screenshot or other file that has been saved to your device and select a suitable icon. Click OK and shortcut is installed on your home screen.

You can similarly use Solid Explorer but installing a shortcut only works via the Solid Explorer Create Shortcut widget and not through opening the Solid Explorer App.
