cant see pics- ? deleted or "hidden"

Motorola Droid 2.2 with Verizon carrier: Can't see pics in my gallery but can see category titles.
- Don't know if deleted or somehow "hidden". Can I recover if deleted without having a "trash
bin" app? ...... If "hidden", how & why would this be? How would I fix it?
