I'm using Android 6.0 on an HTC One M8.

I have placed several mp3 files in the notifications and ringtones folders on my phone's internal storage, as I like to use custom ringtones. It's worked fine since I've had the phone, which has been at least a year or two. However, since updating Android to 6.0, my phone will no longer set a custom text message tone. (It continues to use my custom call tone, so that's okay.)

In the notification sound menu under the text message settings, my phone shows me all the mp3 files I've put in the notifications folder. But even though I can actually select and apply them, the phone will only show that I have "Default rington(Dahlia)" selected. I can choose one of the other Android default tones and it will accept my selection. But if I choose my own file it reverts to the Dahlia one.

What can I do to get my phone to use my custom ringtone?

I had the same issue and I've even gone to the lengths of factory resetting my phone. I am so angry with Android for making so many changes to app permissions without giving people any guidance on how to make their apps function as they had before the Android 6 update.
Anyhoo. I've got a solution.
Go into system settings>apps>messages>permissions and ensure you give the messages app permission to access your storage.
Go back to the messages app itself>the dots in top right corner>settings>notifications then choose your custom received/sent message tone. Once selected, it should no longer revert to the default(dahlia) tone.
Test it by sending yourself a SMS. It should be working for you now.
Why did Android/HTC make such a simple thing so painful?? I was ready to flush this phone down (and Android) the toilet. But I dislike apple so...
Hope this worked for you!!

I just wanted to say thank you soo much jess. I searched everywhere for a solution for this, couldn't find anything that worked until now. It wasn't a huge issue, but it was annoying. Can't believe it was so easy to fix! But thanks to you it's solved now, and i can set the message tone i want to use. You're a star! Cheers ;)
