As title states, can't sync playlists on my new asus zenfone 6. Never had this issue on the last one, zenfone 3.
Playlists simply don't show up anywhere after completing the sync with WMP. And I can't figure out another free way to sync the playlists. What happened to the old way? Is there anything I can do beside hand picking each darn song from my library?

Windows Media Player having been around for almost three decades now, it gets referred to differently a lot, including WMP:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Player#History

But getting back to the original query, what media player app are you using on your Zenphone 6? Are there any 'create playlist' options in the app's settings menu?
The VLC app, just as example is free and no ads, and includes the ability to create playlists:

If you're using the default app in your phone, a third-party app 'might' be better at reading those existing WMP playlists.

I know what "WMP"(Windows Media Player) and Windows is, but it's rather like I know what herpes is. I know exactly what they are, but I don't want to be dealing with them myself.

There was another recent thread about difficulties with Windows and playlists.

Android recognises M3U and PLS playlist files, so check if your Windows software is using M3U or PLS playlists, and that it's transferring them to the phone correctly.
