Can't tell when phone is in use!

When I'm making a phone call on my Moto Z, if I leave the screen where the big red button is showing, I can't tell that the call is in progress. It was never obvious but there used to be a tiny phone icon in the status bar at the top of the screen; now even that seems to be missing.

Sometimes I switch screens during a call and can't even get back to the phone screen to hang up, or don't realize I haven't hung up. On a couple of occasions, I've even inadvertently dialed a number (for example while doing a search and accidentally hitting the phone icon) and not even known I had been connected.

Am I missing something? Is there some setting I need to change? Is there another phone app that works better?

If you're in a call, all you have to do is pull down the screen from the top middle and see what cards you have open and in one of those cards you will what's in use or what's been previously used if you didn't close them out by pressing the X in the right-hand corner of each card. Also it would be a good idea to go into your device display settings and some modifications if the screen is too dark or time out settings. I recommend setting the timeout settings to 2 minutes or above to make sure the screen is active and your lock screen doesn't come on while you're in a phone call.

Thanks for your replies but it isn't because the display has timed out or too dark, but if I happen to change screen on purpose or inadvertently (by swiping, for example). There is no phone icon in the status bar. If I know I'm on the phone, I'll eventually find my way back to the screen to hang up ... but if I don't realize I haven't hung up or that I had dialed it accidentally, I wouldn't know that there is a call in progress. So my question is, shouldn't there be something that indicates the phone is in use or am I missing something?

I'm guessing you're looking to have that popup that i have in the screenshot.

Open your dialer app, and in it's settings, see if you have a setting called 'call related popup' and enable it.
That's for an s5 could be different on other devices

Thanks - that is the type of thing I'm looking for but there doesn't seem to be this feature on the the Moto Z. I had a Samsung S5 before and I think that's what I saw.

By the way, I probably should have mentioned that I'm using the Nova launcher and Tesla Unread - I installed these after I found out that I was not able to get new message counts for things like texts and Facebook. I have not found any phone settings in this interface either though.

Is there better phone/dialer app available?

Did the issue start after downloading Nova and Tesla unread?
Are you using the dialer that came with the phone?
If you make a call using a different app for example WhatsApp does it give you the notification that there is a call?

Being that i couldn't recreate the issue on my phone, the only thing i could suggest is to clear data of your dialer app. Go to settings/apps/in the menu, select 'show system apps'/phone/storage/clear data. This will clear your call logs but Shouldn't clear your contacts.

Or download any dialer from the play store and see if they offer what you're looking for.

Thanks for your reply.

When you say you couldn't recreate the issue, what are you actually seeing when you're on a call (and not in the dialer screen)?

When I am on a call, SOMETIMES there is a little white icon in the notifications bar at the top of the screen. (I think this is also what appeared on my previous phone, the Samsung S5.) It's not very prominent at all and easy to miss, but it's there. However, at other times, there isn't even a tiny icon so there is absolutely no indication that I'm on a call. If I swipe down, buried among all the other cards I'll see one indicating the call the in progress.

I would expect there to be a decent sized button in the corner of the screen like the one in your screenshot and which I believe I used to have on my old Moto phones. What am I supposed to see?

I haven't tried a different dialer app yet. I have been reading descriptions of various apps but none of them mention anything about call status indicators. But I'll try something.

In my s5 i have a phone icon in the notification bar, and i have that floating box that's in the screenshot. What i was saying about recreating the issue, i meant to say that i couldn't even find a way to disable the notification, that's why i would imagine it's an issue with the app, hence my suggestion of clearing app date. Did you try that?

As far as I remember, I've never had the floating status/hang-up button on the Moto Z. I might have had it on the Samsung S5, but I'm getting confused between that and the other Motorola phones I had before. I've tried clearing the app data and it makes no difference.

I downloaded an app called Blimps. It provides the floating bubbles (blimps) that I'm looking for and works well.
