Can't use a sound file for ringtone

Having trouble setting my ringtone to a new sound file. The sound file is a short mp3, I put it in the same folder as all my other ringtones are in, but when I go to Settings, Sound, then ringtone, that file is not listed among the others. I've done this many times before with other sound files and it's always worked. Is there some kind of setting file I need to alter?

Try finding the file in your file manager but don't highlight it.Then click on your phone button that lets you get to the,"More" option,Settings and make sure the show hidden files and extension options are ticked?

Are your other ringtones MP3s? I had to create a folder called media and do a new folder called audio to get the Samsung to see MID and MP3 files. The Nexus 4 seems to be using that file as well.

Restart you device one, open your music player, search for that ringtone there, long press on the that tone, and set it as ringtone.

It will work.

When I had my old HTC phone, I had to use an app called RingDroid. It takes your soundfile and does something to make the phone recognise it as a ringtone.

I currently have a Samsung and don't have to do this. I just copy the file over to my phone and my phone recognises it as a ringtone.

The first time, I had already tried rebooting my phone and it didn't work. But today, I tried it again, and that was all I needed.

The ringtone is not under DRM, it's very short (a few seconds) and most of my other ringtones are also short mp3s (one or two are MIDI). Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it.

Great.

It was so common with older versions of Android that we did it without thinking about it. The reason was that they scanned all directories at load time to locate all those with the names Ringtones and Notifications.
