Car Charger for GPS usage

Has anyone recently purchased a car charger for their mobile phone that is capable of keeping the phone charged while GPS navigation software is in use? I'm looking for one which is available through ebay or an online UK retailer. My phone is an HTC Desire with a standard micro USB port. Don't need a cradle/holder.

It seems depend of if the car's cig adapter meets properly the standard.

I never had a problem with the C200 :)

I got the impression that other chargers are "more universal" ... they fit well in more cars than the offical HTC charger. Problem is that I don't know what car I'm going to be using it in so I can't check if it fits well in that car before I purchase it.

Well ... the important part of the C200 is its cable. The cable is a pure charging cable with HTC's coded microUSB connector for charging HTC phones properly with high current.

So, every generic car charger with an output of 1A or more would charge the Desire properly if this cable would be used.

I bought what is supposed to be a 2A charger from ebay and connected the official HTC cable to it but it still didn't work properly.
 
I use a relatively cheap power inverter that outputs 115V AC. It also has a USB port that will do 500mA so I can rely on that if I don't have an AC plug. The advantages are that it will charge anything at full speed, and that it will work with proprietary connectors. The cost is a bit higher than a car charger, but it's the last cigarette adapter that you'll need to buy.

I mean the coiled cable of the HTC car carger C200 :)
This is a pure charging cable (with jumped data pins) and with this cable, your 2A charger would charge the Desire properly.

I think, you have the HTC USB cable that came with the Desire's wall charger.
This cable is a standard USB data cable and won't do the trick.

Not sure how "relatively cheap" and easy an inverter is to install. I will only be using it for one month in a rental car.

I tried both the cable that came with the charger I bought from ebay and the HTC cable that came with the Desire's wall charger. The funny thing is that when I connect the phone to the PC using the cable that came with the ebay charger it says "Charging AC" and Windows doesn't detect the phone. However, when I use the HTC cable, Windows detects the phone and it charges in USB mode. I'm quite surprised to see that my USB port is supplying enough power for AC charging mode.
 
Funnily enough the ebay charger is working properly now with its own cable. Didn't do anything different to the last time I tried. Thanks for your help guys.

It isn't a surprise, if your PC has two USB at least. Then you'll have 2x0.5A=1A available as charging current :)


So, your eBay cable might be a pure charging cable, without data wires in the cable and with jumped data pins on the microUSB connector.

If this 2A charger with this charging cable charging "AC", but can't charge the Desire properly while navigating, then you should measure the phone's discharging current.
'Battery Monitor Widget' will show you the phone's charging/discharging current in a graph by time.
