Casting to a chromecast via a Nexus 5X.

My Nexus 5X provides a casting feature.
Previously I had a Samsung smartphone without automatic casting feature so I casted towards an audio chromecast. After starting the process I could stop the app on my phone since the connection was taken over on the chromecast and worked independently.
On my Nexus, the same app has to stay open apparrently since the default casting option is used and the connection is NOT transferred to the chromecast. So I'm no longer using both my chromecast and smartphone in an optimal way.
How can I solve this problem? Can I disable the 'standard' Nexus casting feature in one way or another?

Are you using the cast button in the dropdown/quick settings or the cast button from an app..??

Have you tried casting with any other apps (Google Play Music, YouTube Music, etc) to see if the behavior is consistent across the board or specific to that app?
