Welcome to AF, there are many reason your phone is shutting off. Any heavy load towards the CPU will cause shutting off, so make sure to close them apps. Another is due to heavy CPU use the phone will shut it self off to protect it self.
I had a Smasung intercept on Froyo pushing that phone to the limit would cause it to freeze and it will shut off. I also had a Optimus V on 2.3 it would also freeze and shut off(rarely and the OS was a alpha so results may very). The phone will start closing apps only when apps are not used but if your using pandora and playing a game...you will have a bad time (for low end phones). Although anything on 4.0 comes with the sweet task killer built in where all you do is swipe away. Not trying to start an argument, but that doesn't make sense, and if this is the reason, it would seem to be a major flaw in the hardware and would need to be fixed/replaced.
As many of us know, androids (except old ones like Froyo, Eclair, and Donut... does anyone have Donut anymore?) don't have much need for task killers. The android kills running apps as it needs to, to make space. To protect itself.
I've never heard of an android letting running apps build up to the point of where the device actually shuts off. When it overheats, yes. But there will be a warning message stating that the device is overheating and will shut off.
