Chainfire announces the end of SU Development

Yeah, I have long said that the benefits of rooting and running custom ROMs would decrease to the point that doing so would be counterproductive... if possible at all. We have reached that point.

The ownership change of the SU app happened a while ago, at that time I saw the comments and issue reports in the Play store reviews and I did not do the update to the new version. I kept the old CF version on my 4.4.2 rooted S5 until recently when I finally did an update to 6.0.1 and had to give up root (tried to root it but was not successful). Actually the app is still on the phone but of course it doesn't do anything.
I never did custom ROM's, always stayed with stock, but rooted for the other benefits like ad blocking, Titanium Backup, and various customizations that were not possible otherwise. I do miss TB, I've got Helium but it's nowhere near the same, but I will say that Blokada is doing as good a job of ad blocking as AdAway.

Yes my hat's off to Chainfire for making it easy enough for a noob like me to root a few years back. I've got fond memories myself, not least I ended up here. I'm still not convinced that rooting is completely pointless yet though. Google have never convinced me that doze mode actually works like Sony stamina which they copied it from. Honestly since doze I've never had a phone that actually wakes up for individual messages once it's gone into doze. I'll always get them in batches so as long as that keeps happening I'll keep rooting so I can turn it off ;)
 
I really want to make a phone that has no borders :)

I do believe there is definitely a lot of potential for a phone that is totally unbrickable and very free and open and allows you to install what ever you want to on YOUR device.

Also a nice removal internal SD as well to boot! That would be my dream device I would looooove that phone :)

It is very sad the way Android is going... I don't like what I see going on sometimes...

The saying usually goes ... "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians"... but in this case sadly their are far too many followers and not enough rule / game breakers!

And the so called "chiefs" and their beliefs and moral compass is totally questionable... they don't even allow to to change the battery any more its disgusting what is going on...

I believe the industry will do a full turn around and someone will come out with a device that is not OS locked to only 1 single OS and will allow who ever has the knowledge to do so on their device may do so as they please! :)

Freedom.. it will always breaks free.. sooner or later..

I think there is massive potential for people who would want something extremely customizable to suit their needs with no restrictions put in place by ass hole manufactures.

Maybe not impractical like upgradable ram / cpu because a phone would be too small to do this so certain things I think could only be reserved for larger devices but it is always the idea that is what counts!

I could make an absolute fortune making such an extremely flexible device... you just need a little bit of spice and that special love / passion ;)
 
A phone that isn't locked to one OS would be fun, but it really depends what OSes you want to support. Apps will be the issue though. So a combination like Android and Sailfish I could see, since you can add android app compatibility to Sailfish. Android plus iOS (as if Apple would ever allow that!) would face the problem that you'd need completely different sets of apps (and duplicate contact books etc).

I currently use Macs for work in part because I got fed up with dual booting (I'd mostly use Linux, but occasionally need apps that weren't available for Linux, and just having to stop everything else to run them was a pain). So it would be important to me that I could access pretty much everything whichever OS I was using.

Of course if you just meant "same hardware, choose your OS" rather than dual boot that is simpler :).

Oh my word yes Apple would never in 1 billion years ever want to give out their source code! :/ darn but maybe there would be all kinds of ports and mods and when Apple would come around screaming at me about how my "too open" device has all kinds of people porting their OS onto my machine and they say "it must stop immediately or else they will take me away!" kind of thing :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I wonder what kinds of other ports would be ported on as well? :)

lol imagine spending millions of dollars (really? maybe it is only a few thousand? hmm interesting question..) of developing a super dev phone and only 8 people buy it!! XD

Android may be nearing its end as an operating system (well, come on: we only have ten letters left!). It will be interesting to see if Google's super-secret Fuschia OS will take Android's dominant position. With Samsung’s Bixby 2.0 going open source and ubiquitous across multiple platforms, that may well be the future of our mobile lifestyles.

BTW Stinky: two chiefs is too many chiefs!
 
Hey while we are on the topic of a super open phone - I loved my Nokia N900 - wow that phone I absolutely loved it I just wish it had taken off :(

Hmmmmmmm..... 400k views? ... I wonder... ... what if there really is a potential market for a super open phone?

It is sad... Nokia sold their soul :(

Does anyone remember the unboxing of the N900 that you had to hack it to open it? :)


The N900 was one of the best phones ever made.
