Root Changing/removing bootup sound

squeakyg

Newbie
I have a UK Galaxy Ace that came with Android 2.3.3. I have no interest in custom ROMs or anything -- it's fine the way it is. I've rooted it for the convenience of a few root-only apps.

Just one annoyance: I would like to remove the very loud bootup sound/animation. I am looking at the file structure of the phone with ES File Explorer, and I have located a file called "poweron.ogg" in system/etc/ which seems to be the annoying sound.

How safely can I delete this file? Would it simply stop the sound from playing or would it screw up the phone during startup?

I honestly don't know but if you're going to risk it you could copy the file to somewhere else and try playing it.

I didn't dare to remove the file but I replaced it by one full of silence.

To save you the work, here's the one I used:
poweron.ogg

It worked like a charm.

My smartphone was rooted by SuperOneClick 2.32, and I had to remount the /system in read and write mode.

I did that via Terminal Emulator and running:

su
mount -o remount rw /system

Then I replaced the poweron.ogg via Ghost Commander.
