Help Changing ringtone extension

I have a portion of a song I use as my ringtone. It is in MP3 format and works fine. The problem is because it is in MP3 format it is also added to my song play list which I don't want. I'm quite sure Android's native ringtones have a different extension and thus are not added to the song play list. How can I change my MP3 ringtone into this other extension so it does not play with my songs? Any help would be appreciated. Ted

what music app do you use?

many 3rd party apps allow you to filter out song less than X seconds from being recognized. poweramp is a top rated and highly recommended player.

you should also be able to limit where you search for songs.

Does deleting the song once it has been made a ringtone work?

Use a player which will only use designated music folder(s) as source?
