Changing sata hd???

i recently bought an old computer (Sony PCV-rz54g), and its a pretty good computer for its age. The problem is, I can't install windows xp on it. It hangs in the "starting up windows". I've tried everything, even pressing the f5 key when it says to press f6. I finally came to the conclusion that the reason it doesn't start is because i guess the video card drivers are not installed. Theres no way i can get them without a recovery disk(i've tried the sony e support site, but the drivers there are .exe files) which i dont have. Anyway would it be possible to take out the HD and put it in my other PC, install win xp, then put back the HD in the original computer and make it work??

NOTE: Ive managed to install ubuntu 11.04 perfectly with a cd, also ive managed to install win 7, everything works except the sound and video card as they are not compatible with win 7, which is the reason i want to install xp.
Thanks in advance

UPDATE-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just found out the operating system that came with this PC was Windows

Try and instal it with MCE and see what happens.

You can't simply mount the drive in another pc and install XP on it. When Windows installs, it takes account of all the other hardware and configures the set up specifically for that motherboard, chipset etc.

Sometimes you can run the repair console in the correct machine and botch some of it but its a really bad idea

Furthermore, when installing, XP uses a generic VGA driver.sys that every video card should be able to use that has been made since 2001, so somehow this does not seem correct. I could be wrong, and have been often before, but in my experience, I don't recall that ever happening b/c of a missing 'video driver'. Unless this is a custom made (like nLite) XP?

Is your BIOS set up correctly to allow for the XP install to occur? By chance, is the SATA port that your HD(s) is/are connected to ahve RAID enabled on them (even if you are not using RAID)? This may be causing an issue....

Yeah true. Worst case scenario should be a not quite maximum resolution.

VGA typically runs at 640 * 480, but with some cards I've seen (I think) 800 * 600 OOB. Probably not optimal sinc around 2004 lol. But, yeah, that would be a worst case scenario, unless it is something completely off the wall that doesn't support native VGA - and I'm not sure any card is like that.
