Changing text message ringtone

The rselection of ringtones for my Ace is poor and uninspiring. I have installed my own call ringtone, can I do this for the text messages?

Create a folder on your SD card, named notifications. Copy sounds to it. These sounds can then be used for e-mails. You can do the same for alarms

Sorry for the dumb questions but I have been a Nokia fan for years. How do I create a folder on the SD card and having put in sounds will they then work for texts?

apps
my files
media
make a new file "notifications"
put your ringtone in it
all the way out
apps
settings
sound
notification ringtone
and with luck there it will be.
