Help Character counter for SMSes

I notice that when typing a long SMS, once you enter the second or third SMS, they are no longer starting at 160 characters.

It's like you're down to (1/160)1, and then you type a simple 2 letter word like "to". You think that would change it to (159/160)2 but instead it becomes like (145/153)2.

Why is this?

Every "page" past the first loses some due to overhead in the SMS system.

You can send SMS's over 160 char with the default messaging application, correct?
