Cheetah Mobile :-(((

Well, I still contend CM puts out some pretty good, quality software, it's just that it screws them up with this telemetry crap. Kind of like taking a bite out of a really nice apple and looking down to see half a worm squirming around in the part you just bit off.

As an alternative, take a look at the 'Simple Gallery Pro' app. It's an Open Source project with no ads. No automatic backup functionality like Google Photos but it has nice, extensive feature set buried in its Settings menus so its user interface can be altered quite a bit. The app itself uses Permissions limited only to your device, so there's no interactivity/sharing with an online service running in the background.

Cheetah Mobile's presence in the Play Store continues to fade away. Good riddance.

Excellent news!

From the article:

"Cheetah Mobile is trying to make the best out of the situation. Its website that used to link to Play Store listings of its apps now offers all of its apps as APKs, accompanied by a banner that states: "Official Notice: You can install the latest version of the app by clicking 'Download APK.'"

That's very similar to what ES File Explorer's developers have done. After ES was yanked from Play, they changed their Android button from going to its PS page to downloading its APK. But it doesn't tell you that's what will happen when you press it:

You press 'Android' expecting to go to its PS page; instead, it downloads its APK file.

If you press the Apple App Store button, it takes you to its AAS page--in Chinese! :o

The only surprise with CM is that it's taken Google more than a year to finish the job. That and the fact that it took them so long to cotton on to CM in the first place.

Can't help wondering, though, if the job really has been finished.

I'm willing to bet that CM currently has apps in Play--just under yet another name. And, if by some miracle they're really cleared out now, they won't be for long.

Were I a citizen of China I'd have no problems whatsoever with Cheetah Mobile. I haven't even visited a 10th of my home country yet.
Different political systems have different priorities.
