Chess Walk - online and offline chess

Hi,

I created a chess game for Android - Chess Walk, it's on Market for free under title "Chess Walk (BETA)". It has online mode (you can play on Free Internet Chess Server) and offline mode. The built-in chess engine is not very good, I'll probably focus now on improving its strength and style of play. I would really appreciate some feedback - ideas for improvements, bug reports, your overall impression and anything that occurs to you when using it. Web - androidchess.appspot.com

P.S. I don't have an Android phone right now, what are the comments (if any) in Market?

Wow, don't everybody answer at once.

There are two reviews so far. The first one says " Love this app" and the other says it looks really good but they're getting mysql error when trying to register on freechess.org.

I'm new to Android as of today but I'll be keeping an eye on your app and will give it a shot when I get familiar with my new toy.

Thanks, finally some reply.
freechess.org is actually not in charge of me... my chess app is just one of many freechess.org clients.

I downloaded it and spent about 10 minutes playing.

I agree that the chess engine needs work. During my game the computer made two stupid moves that led to the loss of a knight and its queen. Both moves were unnecessary.

I'm playing on a Samsung Moment and the only way for me to move my piece is to tap on the screen with my finger. I found myself hitting the wrong piece sometimes and other times the wrong square for the move. Other times it was hard to get my move to register even though I've found my screen to be very responsive on other apps.

Would it be possible to use the directional pad for movements? I'd like to see it where you use the pad to move, click the pad to choose the piece and then use the pad to highlight the square you want to move to. The same thing would work for trackball phones like the Hero.

Good work so far, can't wait to see what else you can do.

The engine plays significantly worse on Android then as a standalone application on my computer. When it has 1 second time to think it playes sometimes almost randomly.

I will definitely implement a better way to control the pieces - trackball/dpad support, improve finger mode. The problem with not responsive chessboard is probably caused by my app, I have a vague idea where the problem is... I 'll look into it when I have time.

Hi fhucho,

I have plans use the engine on android mobile platform by building UI interface using android framework. can you please let me know the chess engine used for this game.
