Choosing a new phone

Hey guys, I currently have iPhone 3gs and I'm looking for a new phone.
I'm bored of iOS, and don't really wanna get iPhone 5, so I decided I'll go for Android.
I'm annoyed by constant lagging on my 3gs.
I'm looking for top-end smartphone that will last for 2-3 years.
I want to use it for web-browsing, playing games, listening to music and of course texting and calling.
I'm not a big fan of Samsung, don't know why, I'm just not... I like HTC, it's design especially.
So far, I've picked HTC One X+, but I'm not sure if I should wait for the new Nexus. I've heard it will be LG, but I'm not a big fan of LG either, I've had LG K990, and it was terrible. I don't know how is LG now, though.

Any advice is welcomed! :)

You'll love the screen on the One X, so far it's the best I've seen on any smartphone.

Which carrier are you on? That can effect model availability.

The Nexus model rumors are still just that, rumors, and we should know more later this month.

The One X is a solid performer, and the X+ ought be just that much better.

I'm on O2, living in Slovakia, but I plan on buying the phone off-carrier, so that shouldn't affect me at all.
Btw, does HOX lag in menu or something? I was watching some comparisons against S3 and S3 was just smoother. But HOX+ with Jelly Bean shouldn't have problems, right?

Btw, as I've stated, I'm a beginner with Android and on iPhone you could Jailbreak your phone and download apps/games for free.
I've read you can root android phones and do the same? Or how does it work?
Will I be able to root my HOX+? (If I buy one)
What is a ROM,Kernel?

Also you don't need to root an android device to install apps from other places. Google gives you the freedom to choose where to get your apps from

No problem :). Roms aren't piracy. Roms are free to use for anyone :D Rooting and jailbreaking discussion is also fine.

Its just against site rules to discuss how to get paid apps for free.

Anyway...Rooting for android gives you full administrative rights on the device. You can make any changes to it you wish, and that includes flashing new ROMS/kernels. It also allows administrative rights for the apps that you choose to give them to. You can overclock the CPU for better performance, underclock for better battery life, add functionality, and much more. If you're on an android device, Rooting is the way to go :)

The easiest way to think of a ROM is that it is your phones operating system. A rooted android device can change this. Developers have customized ones that add different functionalities or settings not available on the stock ROM. They are able to do this because of the open source nature of android.

You can also install different versions of android ahead of when the device gets officially updated. I am running the newest version of android (Jellybean) on my phone using one of these custom ROMS (cyanogenmod 10) even though my device hasnt been officially upgraded by the manufacturer yet.

Kernels are sort of the gap between the hardware and the software. Like ROMS, these are open source as well so developers can make changes to them to make them perform better or save more battery. There are even functional things that can be added here as well such as USB host mode or 2 way call recording.

My advice is to wait for some htc one x+ reviews before buying it...The one X got a few problems like bad battery life,multitasking problem(in android you can open apps and they will still be running in the background till you manually close them,htc made a time limit for every app then it will automatically close) and from what I heard,it's kinda laggy because htc sense is too heavy.If these problems are gone with one x+ then it surely is a great device but I personally don't recommend phones with non-removable batteries but that's just me.
