Chromecast 5.1 Sound?

Hi there. I have a Chromecast device on the way and have a couple of questions I've not been able to clear up and I'm hoping that some one who already has one will be able to answer...

1) Does it do 5.1 sound? I know its supposed to do it for netflex but I won't be using netflex. I want to stream movies from my mac.

2) Will chromecast work without my laptop Wifi on?

My basic set up is this....
- Modem in office
- Router in office
- Switch in office
- Duel band wireless network 1 in office
- cable to living room
- Switch in living room
- Duel band wireless network 2 in living room
- Home theatre in living room (to which chromecast will be plugged in)
- Gigabit network

I want to cast from the office using my laptop to the living room using my ethernet cable (not WIFI). Obviously chromecast will be using wifi but I'm homing my wireless router will pass it through??? Is this possible?

3) Assuming that the answer to question 1 is yes and it will do 5.1 sound will my chrome browser pass that 5.1 sound through?

I've read that VLC has a plug in for chrome and I do use VLC but I see no evidence of a plugin on OSX... Chrome will play my MKVs fine but I have no idea whats playing them.

Can some one let me know if they have a similar set up with success?

can't answer question 1 or 3, and to clarify a bit for question 2:

so Chromecast is connected to your home network via Wi-Fi. anything on the same network can control the Chromecast then. it doesn't matter if the device is also Wi-Fi, or LAN.

for example, my setup is a desktop connected to my router via LAN, and then my Chromecast via Wi-Fi. i can send anything from my desktop to my Chromecast.

but in your case, since you have 2 Wi-Fi networks, i'm not sure if they're connected/paired together with some configurations. it would all depend which router your Chromecast is connected to, and which router your Mac is LAN connected to.

for streaming videos, i've personally just been using MP4 files. Chrome plays those natively and i don't have an issue converting my stuff to this format.

Thanks mrhomiec. I thought that might be the case. Yeah every thing is on the same sub net so should work fine.

Any body else able to help me with my 5.1 Sound question? I'm considering building a 'Fling' jar to get it working. Anyone else have experience with 'Fling'?
