clean esn and sim card, any need to check these days

So I just purchased a used phone via CL. I had seller meet me at VZ store as I needed a micro sim and I had a regular sim. I also wanted VZ to check for clean esn.

With new sims for 4g, I really don't need to go to a store anymore. In theory, I could just pop a sim card in, and the phone would be good to go.

However, i guess the phone could still be reported stolen or insurance fraud and then the sim card wouldn't work?

I guess I am asking that do I still need to go to VZ store , or are phones not checked for this anymore and I just plug in sim card?

If the phone does not pass activation it will not work. the phone has to be Unlocked

When ever you buy as used phone you need to have the ESN checked (even with sims)with the carrier because it could be stolen or the account could be behind and the carrier will lock the device.

Yes, always have the phone verified at a store before buying it.

I would hate to spend $50 - $200 on a phone and find out later it can't be used.
