Root Cm 12.1 Issue

Hunsdale

Newbie
Ok so just got back to the Galaxy s3 which I am supper happy about because it is one of my fave phones. My goal is to put Cm 12.1 on it so here is where I am at:

- I have the phone rooted

- I have Cwm 5.o. something I believe ( if it really matters I can look it up)

- I have Cm 12.1 on my sd card ready to flash

- I have made 2 nandroid backups through Cwm for emergencies lol

My problem begins here! When I load up Cwm and get ready to flash it seems my phone cannot recognize my sd card. Oddly enough it has been formated by the phone and works when phone is on. This means I can say put and apk on phone and load it from sd card. Again though oddly enough it does not work in Cwm.

Now I have done my research and it seems like the problem may be that the sd card is formated as a secondary drive instead of primary? I dunno if that makes sense but it is what i could find out on my own. I Cannot attach my sd card to computer to use Mini Tool partition and I think this means I may need to buy a new Sd card that I can attach to computer to format properly. My Sd card is formated to fat 32 and basically my big question is this:

Is there a way to flash Cm 12.1 onto my s3 without an Sd card or is there a way to get Cwm to recognize my Sd card without buying a new one and formatting it?

Phone Details:

Model number: SGH-T999V
Android Version: 4.4.2
Kernal: 3.4.0-1784548
Build Number: KOT49H.T999VVLUFNH2

Oh and my phone does have that Knox security on there aswell for whatever that is worth. Any help would be great and if you have any recomendations I would be happy to hear it from this situation to even a rom you think would be better suited for my s3.

If you cant access the sd card and you backed up your rom to the sd card id try a quick restore of the rom just to make sure you can cause if you go to cm12.1 and dont like it or want to restore to stock you might not be able to if its not reading the sd card.

Oh I took the backup off the sd card and put it on computer so I don't lose it but without Cwm reading the sd card I cannot flash anything including stock rom or new rom because I cant run it from the internal storage obviously or when it wipes the phone it wipes the file it needs to run and though I have never done it I assume that would brick my phone.

Flashing through internal doesn't wipe anything, i think your safe to flash through internal but the restore of the rom might be a problem cause you have to wipe internal storage to restore to stock.

Well that is def cool to know for the future but considering I may need to flash stock back if there is a problem I think the biggest thing I wanna do Is get my Sd card reading on cwm? Any Suggestions?

Hmm iam not sure how the recovery was built but is there any other recoverys for your device like philz or twrp that you know about. Might have better luck on another recovery if you have one for your device.

Currently I only have Cwm and mainly for the reason that most tutorial suggest it which makes me confident in it. How are twrp and philz in your experience?

I like them more than cwm cause theres more things you can do with them. Their both really good recoveries.

How did that get put in the quote? Didn't mean to do that

Haha no worries not my first forum :) . Ok so which one would you suggest over the other? I will load it up give it a shot and then let you know results within 24 hrs because I gotta head to sleep soon. I very much appreciate the help thanks

Twrp is still in development but philz is still good. Its hard to pick but try twrp.

Cwm is definitely garbage. Get twrp for sure. Get flashify from the play store, it will download and install it for you.

Only if you get a standard build if you get a modded build of cwm its like philz, philz is based of cwm just some different features

And I finally got it. What a freaking handycap I am lol. My problem was i was wiping delvikcache and cache before the system restore not after. I got 12.1 on my phone and could not be happier. Twrp was a great help so thank you so much to those who took the time to reply and help me with my issue.

Glad you got it. I became a guide here because I like helping. If you have any other issues, just ask. And now that you have twrp installed, I have a little something to help you spruce it up a bit. Download this zip file. Don't flash it though. Using you favorite root file explorer, go into your internal storage. Navigate to the "TWRP" folder and open it. In here create a new folder and name it theme. Place the zip file (ui.zip) I gave you into it.
Now exit the file explorer and boot to recovery. Check out your new twrp. The controls are a little more intuitive, and the color really pops!
Enjoy!!
If you find you don't like the way it looks, just delete the ui.zip and it will go back the way it was.
