CM mod

I just installed CM on my Nexus 7 tablet 2012 and it wouldnt take the Google apps zip because not enough room.
I played around with CM and I didnt see what was so good about it....It didnt seem much faster and there is no downloading into it,,?? or how do you do that?? Can you get apps from within CM?
How would I get a smaller package of apps for CM?

select the cm android version you got and check the cpu you have(CPUZ From play store) and then download the Pico gapps(smallest -maybe like 100 mb) for your phone and then flash it using recovery.
