Has anyone gotten one of these before? I may or may not have been downloading something via a torrent, and one of these e-mails showed up in my inbox. Is it anything to be worried about?

Sounds suspicious. Was it addressed to you or the account holder personally, did it have your account number, or was just something generic like "Comcast Account Holder"? Was there a reply to address for ...@comcast.com?

I had something like that a couple of years ago sent to my Gmail, claiming I was downloading illegal materials via BT Internet. That would be clever of me, considering I'm in China.

No, its an official Comcast e-mail....

I did some googling, and the general consensus of the internet crowd is to just ignore the e-mails, Comcast has never actually done anything they threaten to do in the e-mail.

Rights holders have tended to take a less rigorous attitude to enforcement over the last couple of years, however there have been cases where they took people to court and won awards of thousands of dollars.

I think I read that they tend to only persue the most flagrant offenders these days, so if you may or may not have been downloading a lot of torrents, you may or may not want to ease back a touch, given you're clearly now on their radar ;)

Optimum Online used to send out this kind of mails, saying that you might get sued for downloading things off torrent. I have not heard them doing it for a while, but different ISP have different policies. My friend from colorado got his internet disconnected for a week for this.
My advice would be is to clear up your torrent downloads right after it finishes. If you get more of this emails, you might want to change your ISP.

If you are worried the federales are going to show up in the middle of the night and carry you off to some secret gulag, I doubt that's going to happen. If you are worried about being monitored and possibly having action taken from a small fine or a major lawsuit or having your service restricted or cancelled? It's possible depending on how big of a blip you are on their radar.

If peace of mind and good karma is worth a few bucks, you could always consider getting copyrighted content from legitimate sources.

Before this turns into a tutorial on how to torrent copyrighted material without getting caught, I'm locking the thread. If you'd like to revisit the topic, please send me a PM.
