As for up coming devices that Sprint has currently announced, I would not choose any above the Evo. Unless you want a dual screen crazy gimmick phone or a windows phone, then Evo is your answer.
However, Sprint tends to release big phones in the summer and I would imagine they will be announcing something in the next couple months that would be an upgrade from the Evo. And since you are a new customer, you will not be eligible for 1 year upgrades, so you will most likely have the phone for two years. So if you can find a way to wait, it may be worth it - but maybe not. Obviously it's up to you to decide... but that's my 2 cents. I currently love the Evo.

I just upgraded from a Hero to an Evo over the weekend. Right now my one & ONLY issue w/ the Evo is the size. Other than it being a pretty big phone I love it. I couldn't tell you much about the battery life bec I've been on it non stop since I got it. Sprint & Best Buy both told me I'll probably want to get the extended battery but IMO the phone is big enough, I certainly don't want to add bulk.
If you're wanting an entry-level, less expensive phone I'd suggest the Optimus S. I've heard great things about it. But the Evo...so far GREAT!!

I would at least wait a few weeks until after CTIA to see what is announced.

I just got me an EVO shift, and I gotta say I am impressed with it so far. It is not as big as the EVO, and fits better in my pocket. The 2nd gen processor is BLAZING fast, and seems to use way less battery than the big EVO. Anyway, just know that whatever you choose you won't be able to upgrade for 2 years, as per sprint changing their upgrade plans, so make sure you are really sure that it is the phone for you.

What people? I saw a few that recommended to just check out what was coming "soon". But I didn't see any post that said if you buy now you're SOL.
If the OP is seriously considering waiting then there nothing wrong with waiting a few weeks to see what’s up and coming this summer.
It's not like the OP has to get a new contract with ATT and is free leave anytime with out ETF so maybe waiting is a better option.

Yeah, most people probably don't buy used phones and swap 'em around like we do. They go with the way the contracts work. I prefer to buy phones out right, but can't always afford to. I was merely explaining that their upgrade plan was changing, so be aware of it. "People on here" don't act that way , they try and give good advice.

Lol, telling somebody to make sure that they are "really sure" before getting the phone implies that it is a major decision. My point was that it is not really a huge deal to get the evo now, as there are other options that are rarely mentioned on here regarding buying/selling phones. It wasnt meant to be an insult; just simply staying the facts after reading so many similar posts.
If you're in a 4G area, jump on the Evo. If not, go month-to-month to see what's next. As much as I'm an Evo supporter and could recommend it, I think it shines best with 4G.
Make sure the service is what you'd like. If you want to try Sprint service, use the 30-days and get the Evo and just keep the number they give you temporarily letting them know you will port your old number later if the trial works. Keep your old phone (even though it will cost you), but reduce your service to anything you don't think you absolutely need and simply go monthly without contract. Use the Evo to it's fullest in the 30 days. If you like, port your old number.

Something else to consider if you do decide to buy now.
Best Buy just started their "Buy Back" program. Right now (I don't know for how long) it's free when you buy a new phone from them. I bought the Evo & asked what happens if a new phone comes out in June that I'd rather have. With the Buy Back program, in 6 months they will give me $300 for my Evo to put towards a new phone. Granted, I won't get it for contract price but I'll get more out of it than what I put into it. Because they signed me up for free I didn't get into all of the details. It sounds like an awesome deal for those of us that like to have the latest & greatest or just something new more frequently than Sprint will help us out with. I figure if a new phone retails for $500 & I'm getting $300 credit, I'm only out $200, which is what the Evo is with a contract & I upgraded in 6 months, not 2 years...or even 1 year. IF it's that simple it sounds like a helluva good deal. Even if you don't get into the program for free, it's $60 to sign up. Still a pretty good deal.

So you bought the EVO without contract from BestBuy for $599.00, and they are going to give you $300.00 if you return it in 6 months?

I bought mine WITH contract but they give you 50% of the retail price if you trade it in any time from day 31 to 6 months. 6-12 months they give you 40% back.
The Evo retails for $599 so any time I trade up within the next 6 months they will give me $300 credit towards a new phone, providing mine is in good, working condition with all of the accessories. Here's more info on it. I did some reading after I posted. I'm still trying to find the fine print, so to speak.
