Compact Phones

Are there any compact phones out there that can hold their own again the Sony Xperia XZ1 and XZ2?

I'm not a fan of the giant phones, but all the good ones can almost be classified as a pad.

Depends how compact you want, and which dimensions matter to you. The Galaxy S8 and S9 are a cm taller than the XZ2 Compact but only 3mm wider, and 5mm shorter and 5mm narrower than the full size XZ2. So for some they would count as compact. The regular Pixel 2 is a similar size to them, but at this point I might wait for the Pixel 3 (more modern display aspect ratio and possibly slightly more compact).
