Complete back up

cpc12

Newbie
I would like to be able to back up my phone. I had a iphone and I could back up the entire phone like a snapshot. I could restore phone and it would put all photots, contacts, password manager , email, call logs , message logs.. etc

I would really like to do this once and while so I if lose my phone I can just restore to back up and have everything back.

I dont feel like experimenting so I figured I would ask here

Kies says nothing about backing up apps or apps-related data So, I would certainly NOT call it a full backup.

For non-root backup of app data, Helium works the best. If you are rooted, then Titanium backup is the most recommended.

To add to what nicholb said, if you are rooted and have an unlocked bootloader, you can just perform a nandroid backup (complete backup of everything - similar to a system image of all partitions, including app data)

@cpc12 - try to list out (as you started to) all the "data" that you need backed up. If you are using Google services, you'll find that a lot of that is (or can be) already auto-backed up.

  • Email - is stored on the server (be it gmail/hotmail/live/aol/yahoo/etc)
  • Photos - enable auto-upload in "Photos" app in G+ (or in onedrive or box or dropbox or copy), and it is backed up
  • Contacts - store on the cloud (live/hotmail/gmail etc) and just display that list on your phone.
  • Calendar - same as contacts
  • Call Logs - no stock feature available - will likely require third party app (personally, I don't really care for this)
  • SMS - no stock feature available, unless you use Google Voice, in which case, it is available on the web for you.
Game data is sync'd to the web *if* the game dev uses Google Play games framework
App data is not normally sync'd/backed up - there are workarounds, but would need to look at individual apps that you use to see what really needs to be backed up. It is usually possible to use file sync software (I have used FolderMount for this in the past - but there are other options available too)

I just created a contacts.vcf file and stored it on my sd card.

If I pull this file and and save it to my mac can I copy that file onto a new phone if need be ?

seems like an easy way to back up your contacts....

While it is a manual way, that should do the trick - just make sure that you update that VCF file periodically (as you add/update/delete contacts on your device).
