Complete n00b, messed it up?

So I found my old legend in a drawer, thought I might use it at work for spotify, couldn't get spotify and the old android market didn't work either, which wasn't much of a surprise.
Did some googlin', decided to download the sync manager and the update to android 2.3, hoping that might solve it.
What happened was, suddenly the pc told me that the device couldn't be recognized, and now it just says RUU with some information above it, can't connect to it anymore, switch it on or off.
Is it dead? If not, how can I wake it back up to life? Would be great to have the little fella taking care of spotify, and the phone I actually use free for doing phone-stuff, and maybe even save some battery.
Bearing in mind that I hardly even know what rooting is, what, if anything, can I do?
Thanks

Firstly, any information on the screen might be useful. But if it's a black screen on the phone with RUU on it my guess is that it's in "RUU mode", which is the mode the pc would put it in in order to reflash the software completely. So the important question is what it said on the computer: did the update start? Did a progress bar appear on the phone? Were there any messages on the computer about what it was doing?

If it was just put into RUU mode and nothing else you can get it working just by pulling the battery out for a couple of minutes (the couple of minutes is just to ensure the ram is fully discharged - a few seconds would probably be ok). So if the computer rebooted it into this mode then didn't have the driver to do anything else that could be the case. But if it started the update and didn't complete it it would be a very bad idea to try to restart it without completing the update. That's why I'm asking for more information.

(If the update had started you'd need to finish it, one way or another - whether by finding HTC drivers, or a different RUU. I haven't time tonight to check such things).

But 2.3 won't be enough for Spotify: according to a very quick web search it requires 4.0.3 or later, and the legend certainly never got that officially (I don't know about ROMs for that device). So unless you have an old version which does work with 2.3 what you were doing wouldn't be sufficient.
