Help Complete Newbie (but frustrating) Question!

Newbie
I apologise in advance if this has been covered extensively, I have googled several different word combinations and searching this forum to no avail really, and the official nexus 7 support page is useless.

I cant get into my google account on the damn device. I've seen on the official nexus site about application specific passwords and what not but it says that android 4.0 and above doesnt need it? Either way I tried doing it both ways, both using my regular password (after resetting it thinking i was losing my mind) and the application specific password, but neither are working and having spent the last 30 mins + looking online and shouting aimlessly at the computer I found my way here.

Probably a simple fix, again apologies if its been covered many times, but I did try searching and googling...

Are you able to log into Gmail from a PC browser? If you are then the same user name and password is what you use for the tablet.

Yes, as I have said the password is correct ( i may be an android/tablet noob but I am not a computer noob lol) I have checked and double checked by logging into youtube etc, I can get into my google account on my iphone also

I dont use gmail though, I use my google account with my xxx@blueyonder email address.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean by "getting into my Google account". Are you referring to your email account?

To sign into the tablet you have to create an @gmail account username and password. This doesn't mean you have to use that for your email. You just need it to sign into the tablet. The Android cell phones are the same way. For example: when I first sign into my Android phone and N7 tablet I entered my valorian13@gmail.com email and then my email password. This signed me into the tablet.

EDIT:
If the @gmail username and password is not working you could try starting from scratch. Create an entirely new @gmail username and password and then see if you can log into the tablet.

Even though I already have a full google account set up with everything already synced across devices and my youtube etc all done through there? It does say, sign into your google account, not google email....

Hopefully someone will jump in if I am incorrect but I was always under the understanding that for any Android device, your @gmail.com email address is your Google Account. I've never heard of anyone signing into an Android device using any other email address.

I wish I had known this then before buying then to be honest....there is no way I can start out with a new account when I have this one all set up etc....

I'm not sure what all you have syncing but once you log in you can still use the native email app for any email accounts you have. For instance I use the native email app for my Comcast email.

What all do you use your Google account for? You may still be able to access it once you sign into the tablet.

I just read through your link. It looks like these Application Specific password are for apps on your Android Smartphone or Tablet. Not for your initial sign into the device.

I have google wallet set up, all my bookmarks, my youtube, they are all linked in to this account, blog, documents, picasa album etc etc. Essentially everything I've been using google for over the last few years. There was no mention anywhere that you have to have a gmail email account to use the tablet, it almost renders it as useless as having a playbook without a blackberry.

Its still doesn't address the issue of why it says my username and password dont match, if there was some other sign in error, ie you couldnt use any email address other than a gmail one, you would think it would tell you rather than give you that message?

Ok I have created a random gmail account just to get into the device, but it will still not let me add my google account, therefore I cant sign into my youtube account, which again renders the device partly useless because one of the reasons of buying a tablet was to update and reply to messages and subscribers on the move rather than using my phone.

I think im going to end up sending this useless thing back to be honest, I dont think theres any point contacting google as googling (lol) their customer services, they dont look like they have a good track record.

You've got a really weird issue going on. You didn't need to create a new gmail account for your device, the one you had should work. Why it's not working, well that's anyone's guess. I've had my gmail account for 3-4 years now and use it on all my new devices. Like you said, it's linked to wallet, youtube, docs, etc...

Have you tried changing your Gmail PW and then logging in? Might be some sort of simple glitch to fix, but it's definitely a glitch.

Nevermind, I just noticed that you don't use gmail, but you use google for everything...

Let me ask you this, can you check your email through your google account on your PC?

For example, I have my student account (@wgu.edu) which is administered through Google, and I can use it to sign into my tablet, so I don't "need" a Gmail account, just an account that's administered through google. If you just have a youtube/google wallet, etc account registered to that email, but the email itself isn't checked through google, that may be your problem.

I guess what I'm saying is there could be a difference between having a "google account" and "an account for google services"... Just like your facebook probably uses your standard email to sign in, but that doesn't make it a facebook email, just a facebook login name.

Valorian - No, tried it from both, several times, including resetting the device multiple times

badutahboy - No I do not use it to access email services, only as one account which holds all of my google services. I could in effect close this one down and sign up to a gmail email address and link everything in, but I don't see why I should have to?

Actually, I just read the guidebook again,

When prompted, sign in using the email address and password
for your Google Account. if you don’t have one yet, create one.
An email address that you use for any of the following counts as
a Google Account:
• Gmail
• YouTube
• Google Apps
• AdWords
• Any other Google product

I'd contact customer service. Their phone reps are much more helpful than the worthless forum style help they utilize for everything else.

Yep just had a callback from google, a nice guy went through everything I've done and said, I'd done everything he was going to suggest and that it is extremely bizarre but that there was nothing else he could do except give me the number to call Asus tomorrow morning.

I think I'm going to try and get a gmail account that matches my usernames for my current google account and youtube etc and just switch everything across to that, not ideal but god knows how long I might wait for a replacement from Asus and if it would be brand new or refurbed

random question, and sorry if you have tried this - does your password have any odd characters in it?
did you try changing your password to something very simple?
I only mention because as an IT helpdesker, I have had similar situations when people use odd things in there password that dont translate quite right on a different keyboard...

Nope, it was simple, anyway I bit the bullet and created a completely new account, my youtube account is now weird, because it was an old legacy account which looks strange on the new account but other than that at least I have the damn thing set up and working properly

You may be able to add your old account as an extra one once you have a main one. Certainly worth chasing this if you'd bought a lot of apps on the other account
