complex switching one line from AT&T family plan to Verizon?

My girlfriend has a line, apparently, the "main" line on her family's AT&T family plan, but we want to switch her over to my Verizon family plan (and get her a nice Android phone, since she's constantly damning her AT&T quickfire POS) and since I have no experience with AT&T, I don't know how complicated this might be.

I don't think their contract is up for a few months, and that's fine, we're not really in any hurry. I was also thinking... if it makes things simpler ... that she could port her existing number to Google Voice, instead of directly to AT&T, so that if we ever leave Verizon, she can still keep her number. That also would let us get the Verizon ball rolling whenever we want, i.e. when some awesome sale happens or anytime before their contract is up, as long as she doesn't mind carrying a couple phones and we don't mind double paying until we can actually port the number without an ETF.

The real question is, how much trouble is it going to be to remove the "main" number from an AT&T family account?

it wouldn't be any problem porting to verizon, but ur right in waiting until the contract is up to avoid the ETF. Although if it's only around 100 bucks it would probably be cheaper to just pay it than paying for two phones. As far as porting to GV, i'm not sure if this can be done so I can't say if it's easier or not. But I'm going to assume it would be pretty complicated haha. All you need to port to verizon is your at&t account number, a pin/password if there is one, and to verify the billing information on it. Usually goes through within the first hour, but can take up to 24. Just go into a verizon store and tell them you want to add a line to your plan and port the number from at&t, simple as that. keep in mind if she has a smartphone her ETF will probably be around 300 bucks instead of 100... good luck, hope this helps! :D

I was going to do exactly this and they were going to charge me a $140 ETF. I could of changed one of my other numbers in the family pack to the main number. What I ended up doing was just get a new phone number at Verizon and changed the number of my main line at AT&T and give it to my 9 year old daughter. I then shut my landline off as everyone in the family has a cell now. When each line at AT&T expires from contract I will then port them one at a time to Verizon. It wasn't a big deal to change cell numbers. I just sent a mass text to everyone in my phonebook with my new number.

I have the new G2 from T-Mobile and am looking to ditch my iPhone 4. However, I have a family plan with AT&T where my number is the primary number on the account. Knowing that I am going to pay a termination fee, my questions are these: 1) should I make my wife's number the primary number before doing anything? 2) can I port my number to T-Mobile without affecting my wife's service. I know she will have to go to an individual plan but I'm just wondering how to do all this from an execution standpoint before I start doing anything.

I did exactly this with Verizon when switching to Sprint. After you port the number they will tell you that it was the primary line on a family plan then ask you to choose a new primary line.
