Computer wont recognize phone

My buddy has had his One X since launch day and he always get this message when he plugs up his phone to his laptop (windows 7). Anyone know what can be the problem? I guess after 5 months or so of not being able to put music or pictures on his phone it driving him nuts.
 
has he tried installing the HTC sync manager application before plugging in the phone? that should at least install drivers that should help the computer recognize the phone (at least in theory)
 
i tried installing htc sync manager , it was a joke , didnt work , wouldnt recognise the phone , i just connected the phone as a storage device and dragged and dropped the music files i wanted into the music folder on the phone . Worked perfect , you dont need the htc software as far as i can see .
 
He figured it out. I asked him from the start to have the option other then charge only selected.
