Confessions of a former Droid fan!

I have a confession to make.

But first some background. I have been using a blackjack 2 for about 2 years now. I was looking at an iphone for quite a while. Around July of this year, I stumbled onto some information about Android and started to fall in love with everything it was and represented. I have scoured the internet reading any new info I could get my hands on.

Prior to today, I hadn't been able to ever actually see an android phone in person. I'd seen the dummy units, but never a working unit. I live in northern New York, and we realistically, only have the choice of verizon or at&t. The other carriers' coverage is awful up here. In the city where I live, they work fine, but I'm on the road a lot in the outlying areas where they get no signal. However, both the sprint store, and Tmobile store here, do not have any live units...just dummies.

So..as you can imagine, I was unbelievably excited today to be able to go into a store and demo a real live android phone! To be more specific, I was unbelievably excited to go in an demo the Droid!

I sat in the store for over an hour, just playing with the phone and trying out all kinds of things I had read about. The phone was pretty much what the reviews said it was...both pros and cons. Great phone.

confession begins:

...And then I tried the Eris with HTC Sense. I absolutely loved this phone. I wanted to love the Droid, but I kept getting drawn back to this one. I have to confess, even with the smaller screen, I hands down loved this compared to the droid. The movement on the screen was more crisp than the droid. The UI is gorgeous. I loved that I didn't have to hit the switch on top of the droid to wake it up(it's on the front with the Eris). I liked the virtual keyboard better(I didn't care for the physical Droid keyboard, and the virtual android one isn't as good as the htc version). Overall the feel of the phone seemed just better to me.

However, Android 2.0 kept taunting me from the Droid. Not so much the UI, but just the fact that it had multiple account syncing and google Navigation.

I'm so stumped. I feel so torn. Honestly, at this point I think I'm just going wait and see if info on the HTC Passion comes out anytime soon and for either AT&T or Verizon. I'm assuming I'll get the look and feel of the eris, but with Android 2.0 hopefully. I'm looking at a purchase around xmas/new years time, so I have a little time to think about it.

Any thoughts? Anyone else experience Similar feelings?

I was originally going to get the Eris today, but ended up going home with the Droid. Just liked the look and the feel of the Droid better, plus it has Android 2.0 and Google Navi :D

I've had similar feelings regarding the Xperia with its 4.3" OLED screen. I have an iTouch and an HTC WinMo phone, and I think the HTC onscreen keyboard rocks!

I think one of the best things about Android is also one of WinMo's strength's - choices. It sure is nice to be able to choose between physical and software keyboards, and software and UI's, while still having the basic software work the same. Oh, and not have to pay the $10 to $30 per app that most WinMo apps charge.

Since you are up in the air, you may want to look at getting whatever phone you get as a one year contract instead of two. That way you know you'll get all the Android upgrade goodness that will come out in next year's buying season, which may even include LTE connectivity. :D

Aerimus,

Im in upstate NY, near albany to be exact, and switched from Verizon to Sprint back in September, and so far I actually get the same if not better coverage than I did with Verizon, plus its about $50 less per month. When I left I went with the Pre knowing the Hero was coming soon, within the 30 day period....sooo after a couple weeks I jumped over to the hero, and for the past 3 weeks I've loved it, sensui it awesome, and the onscreen keyboard rocks! I'm tempted by the moment, but I like that the Hero has less moving parts, which is part of the reason I left the Pre, which had quite a bit of wiggle in the sliding hinge.

So like I said, you should definitely give the Hero a try (or the Eris). They have stated that the Hero is going to get an update from 1.5 to 2.0, they are skipping 1.6 altogether.

I will also ask if you have considered Sprint, I don't work for them, never even considered them till I did some research, so i figured why not? i have 30 days if I don't like them..I do want to add that I travel all through the northeast and so far the coverage has be awesome!

Ok, i'll shut it now!

Awesome. I will say android beats winmo hands down.my last phone was a Samsung omnia with VZW. You're gonna love android.

I had the Samsung Omnia for a day and hated it. I am coming from the Storm2 so I am looking forward to the Droid.

I'll second that. I had the Omnia for about 15 minutes before it went back in the box. Work sent it to me so I had little choice other than to say no thanks and reactivate my Pearl. If I didn't know how bad the Samsung Glyde was I'd say the Omnia was the worst phone ever.

Can't wait for my Droid to drop tomorrow!
