Its time to upgrade from my motorola razr that has been good to me for the past 2 years. rooted.

Just recently got my wife the Note 2 which is ok. But now im not sure what I want.

Main use of the phone will be to root since i have a unlimited verizon plan and I tether at work.

Im looking at 4 options

razr maxx hd
galaxy s3
galaxy s4
galaxy note 2

It depends whats important to to you...

size, cost, form factor, support, custom roms, being on the same kit as your wife...

size & cost arnt important.
i also use my Razr as a gps/music on my motorcycle via Bluetooth helmet.
i know my Razr held up pretty good when i had a motorcycle accident. no damage to the phone which was 18 months ago.
but i see alot of s3's for sale with broken screens. that's one thing that has me on the fence.

I voted for the S4, but you're right on durability. I've played with the S3 (not S4) for a while and also the new Razr HD, and the Razr does seem quite a bit sturdier. If you're on the fence, I would still get the S4 and maybe a strong case for it. After all, it's pretty unlikely that you will get in an accident... again.

Since rooting is your most important thing right now, I think you have to stick with the S3.

Nobody knows what the development community will be for the S4 and some rumors point to a big lack of interest from developers, so I would be cautious about waiting for the S4.

I think the RAZR MAXX HD is pretty locked down right now, so there isn't much support out there. Aside from rooting, the stock phone would probably be best for you because Motorola tends to have the best antennas/signals/etc. And the phone is super-strong and the battery can't be beat.

You don't seem interested in the Note 2. So that leaves the S3.

I had my S3 in a CruzerLite TPU case for 9 months and the phone handled all of my abuse, so I don't think you have to worry about breaking it. I dropped it a few times and it never broke. If you plan on keeping it naked, then you need to be more careful. In regards to Roms, there is plenty of development support for the S3. So, I think it's the best option right now.

If only the MAXX HD had better support, then that would be your phone. Of the options left, the S3 is probably the best.
