Connect to local businesses WiFi

Hi,
Is it safe to assume that when I'm in a local business, food store, drug store hair salon, Walmart, etc. that I cannot connect to their WiFi unless I ask for a password?
How can I identify which connection is associated with the establishment I'm in? (My phone usually lists 10 or 20 potential candidates, the names of which do not seem to be obviously related to where I am.)
Thanks,
..... john

Hi Dannydet,
Aside from asking them will my phone indicate in some way if I can connect to their WiFi? I'm using an old LGK4 (2017)

In my list of available networks I see a padlock beside the ones that are secured. No padlock indicates no password is required to connect. If you do not have this indicator, simply attempt to join whatever network you care to. If secured, you will be prompted to provide a password to connect. If not secured, you should connect unless you are on the very fringe of the network coverage.
