Connecting a locked phone to a computer

There's something I've been wondering and this seems like it would be a good place to ask it:

First off, I have a Samsung Android (I'm not even what kind it is) and I've made it so one needs to draw a pattern to unlock it. When I plugged the phone into my mac via USB, I noticed that I could transfer files without having to unlock the phone.

I guess my question is this: is this supposed to happen? And what if someone took my phone and connected it to their computer? Would they be able to take my files without having to deal with any kind of security?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I'm sure it depends what version of Android you've got. I've got Jellybean on a Samsung, and it will NOT transfer data via USB until it's unlocked with password or pattern lock.

What version of Android have you got?

Both my 2.3.5 stock and 4.1.2 stock require you to unlock first. I doubt it even initiates a connection until you do.

My current phone (running on 4.2.2) and previous one (2.2 and 2.3.7) ask to unlock device when I connect to my Windows Laptop, haven't connected to Mac so can't say about that scenario.
