Connecting External Drive to HTC One Max

Recently purchased a 1TB External HDD (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Sli...8&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+external+hard+drive) to connect to my HTC One Max after reading it was possible, I also bought an OTG adapter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A9Q03FW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) in order to connect it to the micro usb port that my phone has.

I have tried formatting the drive (exFat and NTFS) but the phone will not detect it, I soon realized that drive was not being powered while plugged into the phone (I can hear it spinning when its plugged in to my PC), Im now wondering if it will detect if the drive is plugged in to a powered USB hub, now with the drive only having one USB port im going to need to buy a split USB cable (one female port into two male usbs), one of the usbs will connect into the powered usb hub, the other will connect into the OTG cable which then connect to my phone. (I will attach a diagram of what I plan to do), also when I have tried plugging it in it says "Phone is in USB host mode", does this matter?

I need to know if this plan is going to work, sorry for the wall of text hopefully my crappy paint drawn diagram will help clear things up, any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
